Peasant Couple Walking to the Left
Other Images:
Engraving, ca. 1537, from Procession of the Newlyweds, 47 x 34 mm. Bartsch 180, Pauli 169 only state. Superb impression on laid paper trimmed on, in places barely inside, the platemark, the subject complete. Beham did three sets of prints depicting peasant weddings and the set titles are merely an attempt to organize them separately. Such depictions of peasants would, at the time, have been considered legitimate representations of Germanic culture, worthy to stand beside evocations of Roman heroic tales and mythological subjects in the library of a German humanist.
Provenance: Sir Peter Lely (Lugt 2092). Lely (1618-1680), a famed painter of portraits, was born and trained in Holland and came to England in 1641, where, after the death of Van Dyck, he became the most notable portraitist in Britain. He was, also, an insatiable collector of works of art and his contacts both there and on the continent allowed him to build an astonishing collection of paintings, drawings and prints. These were dispersed after his death in several auctions beginning in 1682 and continuing through 1694. Both the quality and the quantity were so great that the auctioneers for a time despaired of there being sufficient moneyed collectors to absorb them all. But the sales did well. Lely’s is one of the earliest collector’s marks to be found on a Beham engraving.
