Other Images:
Etching, 1850, from Eaux-Fortes sur Paris, 260 x 190 mm., Delteil/Wright 24 iv/vii, Schneiderman 20 v/x. A superb proof before letters, printed in brown-black ink on cream laid paper with full margins, bright and luminous in appearance; very pale time toning in the area of the old mat opening; the upper right corner of the sheet, far from the platemark, torn and reattached. The image, one of Meryon's masterpieces, shows the towers of Notre Dame rising above the quai-side houses and the little bridge. The scene is completely interpretive; there is no single viewpoint from which it would appear that way in actuality, for the towers are made much higher above the houses and the facades of the houses have a dramatic sweep and curvature that contemporary photographs show was not the case. The whole work is an image from deep in Meryon's psyche, not least the shadow forming a sphinx’s head on the wall to the left of the bridge.
Provenance:
Alfred Lebrun (Lugt 140). Lebrun (1830-1898 or 99) was an employee of the Rothschild Bank in Paris. More interestingly, he was friends with the artists Bonvin, Cals and Jongkind and with the wealthy amateur and collector Alfred Sensier. For the latter’s study of Jean-François Millet, Lebrun compiled a full catalog of Millet’s prints, based on his own superb and complete collection – which was later sold to the New York dealer Frederick Keppel. But the majority of his collection, paintings and prints of the nineteenth century, were sold at auction only after his death.
