Engraving, 1540, 118 x 77 mm., Bartsch 177, Hollstein 77. Fine, sharp and dark impression on thin laid paper, trimmed on the platemark, slightly within in the blank area at the right top; the paper slightly darkened with age, a few small and pale brown spots and some thin spots verso. This is one of Aldegrever’s very few military subjects, but it is also one of his most graceful and elegant engravings.

Provenance:
E. A. Paterson (Lugt 826a). Paterson was a Scotsman who moved to India around 1923 and somehow built a collection of old master drawings and prints by Dürer, the Little Masters, Rembrandt and others. Lugt mentions that his impressions were in general of a “qualité modeste,” but this one was good enough to have been sold in 1969 by C. G. Boerner. Lugt’s illustration of Paterson’s stamp, while recognizable, is not quite accurate; an exact replica is shown here. He also mentions it as a dry stamp or in red or blue on the front of the print, but this one is in purple and on the back.
