Hannah, Mrs. Horneck (The Plymouth Beauty)
Other Images:
Mezzotint, ca. 1759, 333 x 229 mm., Hamilton 108 ii/iii, Goodwin 76 ii/iii. A fine, rich impression, before the second title, on laid paper with narrow margins outside the platemark; a small, diagonal repaired tear at the top. Mrs. Horneck (died 1803), known during her time as the Plymouth Beauty, was the widow of Captain Kane William Horneck when Reynolds painted her portrait. She and her husband were friends of Reynolds and of Oliver Goldsmith. The sitter and the painting were obviously of great public interest, as we have found no less than five different prints after the picture. MacArdell’s is clearly the best.
Provenance:
Albertina duplicate (Lugt 5d). The great Vienna collection of the Albertina has been described earlier under the entry for Martin Treu. This sheet, however, has a different stamp, one that was used only up to 1948. What is generally not known is that shortly before the outbreak of World War II, the Albertina traded some of its duplicates to refugees intending to flee to England, in exchange, of course, for other works. The idea was that British prints would be immediately salable there. It generally did not work out that way, and that is the story of this print, purchased many years later directly from the lady who fled Vienna. What she had given for it we will never know.
