Other Images:
Etching, 292 x 364 mm., The Illustrated Bartsch, Vol. 121, No. 301. Fine impression on laid paper with small margins outside the platemark and wide plate margins; a few soft wrinkles from drying. Denon (or de Non) was many things: courtier, diplomat, author, collector, scholar, antiquarian, museum director (a pavilion of the Louvre is named for him) and artistic advisor to Napoléon. He was also a highly prolific amateur etcher of a variety of subjects including erotica, and a documenter, in etching, of paintings, drawings and other works of art he saw in his extensive travels. His work is a virtual survey of the French view of art in the late-eighteenth and early- nineteenth centuries.
Provenance:
Veste Coburg (Lugt 451a). Veste Coburg, in Bavaria, is one of the largest extant medieval fortresses in Germany and the old, traditional residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Around 1840-50, it became the repository of the ducal collection of arms, armor, coaches, sleighs, coins and about 290,000 prints and drawings, mostly German old masters, though with a smattering of others. It is still a major collection. Duplicates (how odd to find a Denon in duplicate there) were sold off in 1929.
