Ornament Design with a Pipe
Other Images:
Engraving, 119 x 218 mm., LeBlanc 7 (from a set), Berlin Ornament Catalog 833. Fine impression of this extreme rarity on laid paper, trimmed just inside the platemark on three sides and perhaps more at the base; a touch of red chalk near the edge. Unusual as it might be to find a pipe in a seventeenth-century ornament print, perhaps even more unusual is that the complex pattern at the top center is actually the monogram of Louis Roupert and directly below it is the abbreviation “in.”, thereby crediting him as the inventor of the entire design.
Provenance:
A. de Vilmorin (Lugt 187). Perhaps one of the oddities of collectors’marks is to find a small collection. August Leveque de Vilmorin (ca. 1825-ca. 1865), a Parisian, apparently had such a collection, which, Lugt mentions, remained in the family. However, Lugt discovered a second mark (L. 187a) which may also be of the same collector, and there was, in 1930, a sale of items so marked, comprising 16 prints of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and one drawing. One wonders, then, how such a rarity as this could be in a collection of that nature. Perhaps there is another A.V.
