Other Images:
Engraving, 1559, from The Twelve Months with Signs of the Zodiac, 24 x 172 mm., Bartsch 26, Hollstein 34. Very good impression, slightly lighter than the one retained by the B.M., on laid paper trimmed on the platemark. The B.M impression is similarly trimmed. Pisces are at the center in a cloud-like wreath. To the left are workers pruning a vineyard. To the right, a carnival procession with fools playing bagpipes and revelers dressed as Turks. The work is in part derived from a woodcut illustration by Hans Sebald Beham.
Provenance:
British Museum Printroom duplicate (Lugt 302 and 305). The British Museum collection, obviously one of the world’s greatest, had its origin in 1753 with the purchase by the state of three private collections, together with the palace of the Duke of Montague in Great Russell Street, which remains its home. The collection has been enhanced through the years by purchases and gifts and is, perhaps, the single greatest source for research in old master prints. Duplicates have been sold at various times.
