Etching and engraving, 207 x 252 mm., Franken & Van der Kellen 112, Hollstein 151. Fine impression on laid paper with a fleur-de-lis in a shield watermark, trimmed into the image at the sides and top and lacking the verses below (platemark measurements, BM impression: 233 x 270, image: 211 x 270); small surface loss lower left and tiny repaired split bottom center. Despite the trimming, the basic subject matter is all there and this, needless to say, is one of van de Velde’s most atmospheric images, with its dramatic indoor lighting. No other impression has appeared at auction in at least the last twenty years.

Provenance:
Unidentified collector (jjs), not in Lugt. Nothing appears to be known about this small, dark blue stamp or its owner. It is probably from the 20th century, but just might be earlier.
