Charles Benoise
Other Images:
Engraving, 1651, 336 x 268 mm., Petitjean & Wickert 17 only state. Brilliant impression, the guide lines for the text showing clearly, on laid paper trimmed on the platemark, which is visible in places on all sides; repaired tears upper and lower right corners and the margin tip replaced. Benoise (1603-1667) was Counselor to Parliament and later to the Grand Chamber. Nanteuil’s portrait engravings, once widely collected, are unduly neglected today.
Provenance:
Charles Wickert (Lugt 2569). Wickert (died 1918), a Russian born collector and scholar, was the co-author of the catalogue raisonné of the engravings of Nanteuil.
Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris duplicate (L. 684). This is a rarely found mark, as the Bibliothèque Nationale did not sell its duplicate impressions. Rather, duplicates were occasionally exchanged (with other institutions?) and the mark here specifically says “double echangé.” Prints offered for sale bearing any of the other marks of the B.N. should be regarded with suspicion as either stolen or, more likely, reproductions of prints in their collection.
