Mezzotint, 1676, 218 x 269 mm., LeBlanc 42 ii/ii, Wurzbach 34, Hollstein 3 ii/ii. A fine impression on laid paper with large margins; two vertical printer's creases across the center, the larger one without ink loss, the smaller one showing as a fine white line, and minor creases in the margin. Though van Somer's mezzotints are usually reproductive, this one appears to be after his own design. Desert and wilderness are often used interchangeably when describing biblical subjects, but even the latter word seems misapplied to this largely architectural background.

Provenance:
E. Fabricius (Lugt 847a). Fabricius (died ca. 1920) was a Berlin collector of prints by Goltzius, Saenredam and other 17th-century Dutch and Flemish artists. Most of his collection was sold privately during World War I.
