Bacchus and Ariadne on Naxos
Other Images:
Etching, 126 x 144 mm., Bartsch 30, The Illustrated Bartsch 30 iii/iii.
A very good impression, with the address of Daj, on 17th-century laid paper with good margins. In the Greek legend, Ariadne was abandoned on the island of Naxos by Theseus. She was discovered there by the god Bacchus, who married her. The story is the basis of a great opera by Richard Strauss, “Ariadne auf Naxos.”
Provenance:
Thomas Graf (Lugt 1092a). Graf (1878-1951) was an intellectually accomplished man who worked for some time in the United States as assistant to Thomas Edison. Returning to Berlin, he established himself as a book seller. As a collector, he had a particular passion for 17th century Dutch and Flemish etchings, and later for German Little Masters, Italian engravings and finally, 19th-century German prints. The last was sold at auction in 1934, but the greater part of his collection was destroyed in World War II. Still, prints with his mark are occasionally found, and much desired as he had an excellent eye.
Artaria & Co. (L. 90). The art dealer and publisher Artaria was founded in Vienna in 1770 and stayed in business, apparently, until 1936 when Dominik Artaria, the last proprietor, died. The company was also one of the most important music publishers in the world, the original publisher of over 300 works by Joseph Haydn, many by Mozart and some early works by Beethoven, among others. The stamp here, which began to be used around 1820, was not consistently employed and is seen far less often than one would think.
