Other Images:
Original drawing in black chalk on vellum, 205 x 355 mm. Highly accomplished drawing with distinctive delineation of foliage and grass, but difficult to give to a specific artist. The name of Lucas Achtschellink (1626-1699) has been suggested, but there are few known drawings by him, although his painting style shows no conflict with this drawing. Certain elements of the drawing, though, seem comparable to a drawing in the British Museum by the Dutch-English artist Jan Griffier I (1645-1718) and the fact that Griffier was in England for many years would theoretically make it likely that Sandby could have obtained a drawing by him. But overall, the drawing looks Flemish in style. There is some slight rubbing but the vellum, apart from the expected slight waving and wrinkling, has been well preserved without being laid down.
Provenance:
Paul Sandby (Lugt 2112). Sandby (1725-1809), originally a map-maker for the military, rose to be a famous artist, lauded as “the father of watercolor art,” and, as the virtual inventor of topographical art there and a knowledgeable connoisseur of the arts, sciences and literature, an important figure in 18th-century Britain. He, together with his brother Thomas, was among the founding members of the Royal Academy. His personal collection, including his own works and those of his brother as well as of other British, Dutch and Flemish artists, must have been vast, most of it being sold at various times after his death in a series of six or seven auctions.
