Other Images:
Engraving, ca. 1515, 181 x 149 mm., Bartsch 381. A very good impression with light plate tone, on laid paper trimmed on the platemark, which is visible in places, and laid down to heavier laid paper; a few tiny surface scrapes. All the collectors’ marks are on the back of the support sheet, indicating that the print was laid down many years ago.
The engraving is ostensibly based on Raphael’s medallion painting on the ceiling of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican palace, but with such vast differences that one should rather assume it to have been based on a now lost drawing by Raphael, preparatory for that painting.
Provenance:
Fürst zu Fürstenberg (Lugt 2811). Max Egon, Prince of Fürstenberg, born in 1863, conserved in his library at Donaueschingen a collection of about 70,000 prints and photographs. However, the mark here is an early one, probably dating from before that time and most likely of one of Max Egon’s forbears.
Franz Gawet, 1818 (Lugt 1069). Gawet (1765-1847) was an amateur etcher and engraver, based in Vienna. Lugt remarks that he assembled a large and well-chosen collection of prints and drawings, generally of fine quality. The sale of his prints was in 1844.
The print also bears of the mark of an unidentified collector with the initials L.S.
