Other Images:
Engraving on silver, 1583, 52 x 41 mm., Bartsch 198, Hirschmann 239, Strauss 179. A very fine impression of this rare print on laid paper with rectangular margins outside the oval platemark. The printed text is in reverse indicating that the silver plate from which it was printed was the actual work of art (a medallion) and impressions taken from it were incidental (often proofs pulled to inspect the quality of the engraved lines). According to a pencil notation on the impression in Brussels, the sitter's name is Erasmus Vollevens. Goltzius was an acknowledged master of miniature portraits.
Provenance:
Leonard Baskin (not yet in Lugt). Baskin (1922-2000), the late and much esteemed American artist, was a sculptor, print maker, book designer and illustrator, writer, teacher and collector. The prints in his collection were sometimes marked with the stamp of a pomegranate and sometimes inscribed in ink on the verso, in a florid hand, Lisa and Leonard Baskin. As a collector, Baskin was mercurial and always ahead of his time, selling off assemblages of prints and drawings (Bresdin, chiaroscuro woodcuts, etc.) as he developed new interests and new areas of collecting. At his death, he was assembling a collection of images of Terminus, the god of endings.
