Noble Dancers
Other Images:
Engraving, 1543, from the Set of Noble Dancers, 60 x 42 mm., Bartsch 31 ii/iii. Clear and sharp but somewhat grey impression of this rare print, on laid paper with a thread margin almost all around the platemark. Bartsch lists 42 prints by Treu, but mentions that he was unable to find a complete set of the noble dancers, from which this plate comes, and he lacks descriptions for five of the twelve plates. Nothing seems to be known about Martin Treu, though his style and format are clearly those of the Little Masters. His compositions seem to be original and not copied from any of the others.
Provenance: Albertina duplicate (Lugt 5e and 5h). The collection of the Albertina in Vienna, though limited exclusively to drawings and prints, is one of the richest in Europe with, as mentioned by Lugt, 22,000 drawings (including Dürer, Raphael, Rembrandt and Rubens) and 230,000 prints (from 15th century nielli to 18th century color prints). Its origin, and its name, stem from Albert Casimir (1738-1822), son of August III of Saxony, King of Poland. His history, and that of the collection, are given in Lugt’s article for Number 174 and Supplement 174. Duplicates were sold at many auctions from 1922 to 1956.
This engraving also bears the mark of Dr. Herweg, not in Lugt.
