Two Studies of a Robed Monk Carrying a Book

Black chalk on textured laid paper, ca. 1904, 315 x 233 mm. Kupka was an astonishing artist. Born in Czechoslovakia and working later in France, he anticipated or was part of most of the great developments in art in the late-nineteenth and the twentieth century, in painting, drawing, print making and illustration. Romantic realism, sardonic caricature, Symbolism, Cubism, Orphism and abstraction, both reality-based and totally non-objective were all part of his output. This undated drawing, from an early period, clearly demonstrates -- like Picasso’s early drawings -- his credentials. He drew superbly. The drawing is signed with the red estate stamp both recto and verso.
