Ink and wash over pencil, 1883, each image 103 x 70 mm. A preliminary sketch and a finely-finished drawing for reproduction to illustrate an edition of the Lettres de Fontenelle, both in fine pen and ink with pale grey-blue wash on laid paper, the finished drawing also with touches of red chalk. The image shows an eighteenth-century drawing room filled with elegant men and women. The dimensions given, as opposed to usual practice, are those of the drawings themselves; the sheets are considerably larger. Lalauze was a talented and prolific etcher and illustrator of books but is perhaps best remembered today as the man who taught the rudiments of etching to Félix Buhot. Sold as a pair.
