Peering Cat
Charcoal with estompe, wash and white gouache on brown paper, 229 x 294 mm. Higgins was an interesting, individual and, today, very much under-appreciated American print maker. His was an Ash Can art of dark rooms and back alleys, with figures that strongly implied a story – but left you to decide what the story was. The cat here is a bit of a departure, but not really. For the point of the drawing is not feline grace, but rather what is the cat peering at and from where. The drawing is signed.
