Pont de Sichol, Thiers
Black and white chalk on blue laid paper, 1882, 306 x 279 mm. Chauvel was a talented and fairly prolific etcher, whose fame rested mostly on his reproductive work. He was a superb interpreter of the drawings of Rousseau, Daubigny and other Barbizon artists as well as of Charles Meryon. His original work, however, was also of fine quality, even if not exhibiting the striking individuality of a great artist. This neatly finished, attractive drawing of a scene in or near Thiers in the Auvergne is inscribed by the artist with the location and dated, and signed with the estate stamp.
