Black ink over pencil on wove paper, 238 x 156 mm. Prouvé was born in Nancy and though he studied and worked for some years in Paris, he remained closely engaged with the city in Lorraine. He was a typical Art Nouveau artist in the sense that he not only painted, sculpted and made prints, but designed jewelry, furniture, leatherwork, menus, embroidery, posters and art glass. This drawing, while it could be for a print or book illustration, is most likely a design for a book binding, a field in which Prouvé did exceptional and ground-breaking work. We have been unable to locate the precise book for which it was done, and the subject is difficult to read, but probably the arch in the background is the Paris Arc de Triomphe, there is a bare tree and ground foliage, and one assumes that the head is that of a dead man.
