Other Images:

Pencil on papier-calque, 1847, sheet 142 x 127 mm. A preliminary drawing for the etching, drypoint and aquatint of the same name, Béraldi 2, which was published in the Album Hervier, 1847. The drawing is accompanied by a superb impression of the print in the first state of two, on laid paper with full margins. Since the drawing is on translucent paper, it could be reversed for transfer by simply flipping the sheet. Oddly, Hervier apparently forgot this for his signature which appears in reverse on the print as well as the drawing. There are many details in the print that do not appear in the drawing, as the former was considerably worked up in drypoint and aquatint after transfer of the basic image. Sold as a pair.
