Shipping in the River

Colored crayons with scratching out over pencil, 1933, 124 x 200 mm. Although he made a fair number of prints, both etchings and lithographs, this Ohio regionalist artist is far better known -- at least in Ohio -- as a painter, where he is solidly in the tradition of Bellows and Marsh and his teachers Curry, Benton and Kenneth Hayes Miller. This crayon drawing, which at first look seems to be a watercolor, is a bit unusual for him as subject matter, being concerned with a distant view of river activities rather than the social interaction of people. New Yorkers may see in it the Hudson River and the Jersey Palisades – and Singer studied and worked in New York for a time – but it is more likely to be an Ohio scene, perhaps Kentucky seen across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. The drawing is signed and dated.
