Bèjot, Sur la Marne

Sur la Marne, en Vue du Pont de Joinville

Watercolor over black chalk with pen and ink and white gouache, ca. 1895, 154 x 193 mm. A study in reverse for the etching Le Bateau Lavoir of 1895, Laran 118. In making the etching, Bèjot cropped both sides of the image, otherwise the scene is the same. This is a relatively early work by an artist who went on to record the city of Paris and its environs, with grace and fluency, in hundreds of etchings and drawings, all marked by a clear personal style. The drawing is on off-white card and signed in blue pencil. Sadly, we have not been able to locate an actual impression of the etching outside of museum collections, but a photo-copy of the illustration in the Laran catalog will be furnished with the drawing.
