Katwyk

Black chalk on yellowish wove paper, 1885, 232 x 329 mm. A fine sketch by this once world famous and now sadly neglected Dutch printmaker, signed, dated and inscribed with the location. Katwyk, or Katwijk, is in southern Holland on the shores of the North Sea. Though Storm was primarily an etcher – and a fine one – the drawing is more of a lithographer’s conception. The detail given is only enough to define elements, not to describe them. The point of the drawing is spatial organization and atmosphere and that is very well done.
