Traveler in a Forest

Black and white chalk on brownish textured paper, 250 x 398 mm. Beautifully finished and atmospheric drawing on grey-brown paper, the top of the sheet arched. The image shows a forested area with a hill sloping up to the left, a distant horizon visible through the trees, and a single traveler (a robed monk?) with a walking stick headed up the hill. Signed at the lower right and indistinctly dated (?) l893 at the lower left -- or a number 93 or 193. Though the work is clearly Barbizon in style, the actual location is unknown and may be near Lyon where Appian did much of his work. Appian, of course, is much admired as a print maker. Finished drawings by him are not common.
