Argentière
Charcoal on brown wove paper, 1908, 275 x 388 mm. Maclaughlan, Canadian born, American trained, was a peripatetic traveler and a highly productive etcher, well known for images of France, Italy and Switzerland. His drawings, however, are far more rarely seen. At his best, what MacLaughlan conveys is his excitement at the scene, and this rapidly- but expertly-scribbled sheet, gives us that excitement. He gets a range of tone from the charcoal and uses the natural paper to express the snow on the mountains. Argentière is a glacier, and also a village, in the French Alps. The drawing is signed and dated in pencil.
