Portrait of a Young Woman
Pastel on tan paper. laid down to board, 1914, 560 x 460 mm. Petitjean was an important Pointillist painter, although none of his prints are executed in that radical technique, and many of his drawings too are in more conventional line work. Overall, perhaps, he can be thought of as a Neo-Impressionist who often used pointillist techniques. And Neo-Impressionist is precisely what this handsome pastel is, the colors muted and blended, particularly in the draperies, to produce subtle and fleeting spots of color that basically say that white is not the absence of color, but all colors together. The face is sensitively rendered with blue worked into the shadows. A large and handsome pastel.
