Sketches for “Greenwich”
Brush and brown-black ink on papier-calque, 1874-80, 73 x 151 mm. Greenwich (Schneiderman 187) was a very large etching, filled with boats, barges and dinghies, which went through nine states with Haden adding, removing and relocating various vessels. This is one of a group of tiny preliminary sketches of such maritime material that surfaced some years ago, a few of which exactly matched parts of the plate. The boats here do not, but may match some of the vessels that were excised in the course of
development of the plate. Coming from that group, it is unquestionably authentic.
