Pen and brown ink, black ink and brown wash, ca. 1891, 261 x 225 mm. Vierge worked in both Spain and Paris and was responsible for a number of stunning wood engravings, some of them actually engraved by Auguste Lepère, around the turn of the century. He was a superb draughtsman. This is the original drawing reproduced as an illustration in the 1892 English language edition of the picaresque novel by Francisco Gomez de Quevedo y Villegas (1580-1645), and a photo copy of the book page on which it appears is included with the drawing. The drawing is signed. It is on thin wove paper laid down to card and while the outer parts of the sheet are abraded, the area of the drawing is unmarred. Similar drawings by Vierge are in the collection of the Hispanic Society of America.
