Pen and black ink and watercolor on laid paper, 1941, 300 x 498 mm. McBey, at one time, was one of the most famous and widely-collected etchers in the world. Ignored for years, his work has started to provoke great interest again. But even at the height of the etching revival, he had an equally enthusiastic, if possibly different, audience for his watercolors. He came to the United States with the advent of World War II, traveled, etched and painted. He did only a single etching of California (San Luis Obispo), but left us also this fine and typical watercolor of a ranch near Santa Cruz. If the renewed interest in his etchings continues, this watercolor too may again become a highly-coveted object. Signed, dated 21 November, 1941 and inscribed with the location.
