Draped Female Nude with a Sleeping Child (Venus and Cupid?)
Pencil and white gouache in an inscribed circle on thin, brown wove paper, 222 mm. diameter (borderline). The drawing, from a later period in Calvert’s life, is fully signed in pencil. The subject and style reflect Calvert’s later, and more consciously Victorian, preoccupation with large paintings of lightly-draped mythological figures in lush landscapes, rather like the work of a hundred other minor artists and a far cry from the uniqueness of his prints. Nevertheless, the man could draw and the composition is balanced and assured. The sheet has some spots of foxing.
