The Massacre of the Innocents
Pen and brown-black ink with white gouache on grey laid paper, 267 x 181 mm. It is always interesting to see a modern artist tackle a classical subject. Capraro, some of whose very different etchings were published by Associated American Artists, gives us here a free and fluent modern equivalent of an old master drawing. It is clearly an original work, not a mere simulacrum, and if it evokes Tiepolo and Goya, they are hardly poor precedents.
Capraro’s paintings and drawings were the subject of an exhibit at the Yeshiva University Museum in 2006. Light pencil framing lines show that the artist had a thought of reducing the subject. The drawing is signed.
