A Street in Montreuil

Pencil on thin laid paper, 203 x 155 mm. Howarth is one of the less-remembered British etchers of the early twentieth century, partially because of his fondness for church interiors, in the manner of Axel Haig, a subject not much in fashion today. Despite the fact that he was also a watercolorist of some note, this drawing is exactly what one would logically expect an etcher’s drawing to look like: meticulously plotted, precise in detail, the shading expressed through careful line work, the whole ready for transfer to a line-etched plate. Of course, in reality, all etchers didn’t work this way and, at any rate, we have been unable to match up this drawing with a known print (though there may be one). It is quite a lovely little drawing, though, titled and signed in pencil. The paper is a bit crinkled. Montreuil is a village in Artois-Picardie in northeastern France.
