Osmonde et Taminier (Royal Fern and Black Bryony)

Pencil on brown paper, 1875, 390 x 308 mm. Bléry was a brilliant etcher of landscapes and of trees and plants, whose fate it has been to be remembered mostly as the teacher of Charles Meryon. His studies of plants were not meant to be scientific botanical illustrations – though they are meticulously accurate – but works of art, a status that they invariably achieve. There are etchings similar to this drawing, but it does not appear to be precisely related to any of them. The drawing is inscribed by Bléry with the names of the plants, the location and the date and is signed in pencil.
