Bone, Winter near Aylmerton

Winter near Aylmerton, Norfolk

Black and white chalk on grey laid paper, ca. 1920, 280 x 415, provenance: Mercury Gallery, London. A fine, finished drawing, fully signed, laid down on a sheet of thick wove paper. Bone was, of course, the master of drypoint, a technique he used to astonishing effectiveness in such prints as Ayr Prison, The Great Gantry, Charing Cross Station and The Ballantrae Road. But underlying the accomplishments of any great print maker is the ability to draw, and Bone was almost certainly the greatest draughtsman of his time in Britain. The fluency and rapidity of this large drawing are evident, but the scene and the atmosphere are perfectly captured. Had he made it in drypoint, the sheet would probably have been a quarter the size.
