An Arrest near Père Lachaise Cemetery
Pencil on brown wove paper, ca. 1870, 215 x 282 mm. The painter, illustrator and print maker Lançon, inspired by the works of Barye, was well on his way to becoming an animal painter and etcher when he was thrown into war and politics by the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. He was an ambulance aide and sergeant, was taken prisoner, and managed to return to Paris just before the gates were shut. It changed his career. This drawing, of an unknown incident, which appears to be of a military arrest, has all the vigor and drama of something observed on the spot. Lançon went on to draw, etch and paint his memories of the war and of the Commune and also went, as a correspondent for l’Illustration, to the Balkans with the Russian army. There is a street in Paris named after him. The drawing bears Lançon’s stamped signature. There is an old central crease and an area of light staining.
