Pen and brown and black ink over pencil on tan wove paper, 288 x 314 mm., ex collection: E. Leveillé, porcelaines et cristaux (not in Lugt). The drawing, within a rough, circular pencil outline, is a design for a porcelain or glass platter, presumably to be produced by Leveillé, a well-known manufacturer, and successor to F. Eugène Rousseau, whose stamp is on the reverse. Many French artists of the time (Bracquemond, especially) did such work. But Lepic was also a prolific etcher. Ostensibly an amateur, he produced a considerable number of prints and was of enormous influence in methods of producing widely variant images from the same plate through inking and wiping. The identical stork in this drawing was also used in an etching, but with a totally different background. The etching is available separately; please inquire if interested. The drawing is signed.
