A Back Street
Pencil on wove paper, 114 x 176 mm. This is a much smaller, and earlier, work by Bone, taken from a sketchbook and perhaps more immediately recognizable as by his hand. It is also signed. The scene may or may not be London. It shows a back street of one- and two-storey buildings, one apparently a garage of sorts, with unhorsed cabs standing about, workmen and passers-by. A few figures, not actually part of the composition are sketched on the blank wall at the right. Obviously drawn from life, the sketch carefully registers details of the fencing, the cobblestones on the street and the structure of the cabs as well as effectively apportioning light and shade. The line work is precise and intriguing. Although elements are overdrawn, as if to suggest different placements, there are no corrections in the individual elements -- nor did there need to be.
