Pen and black ink on card, 58 x 78 mm. (the first); pencil on card, 54 x 88 mm. (the second). Painter, lithographer and caricaturist (as well as ethnologist), the Mexican Covarrubias came to New York at the age of nineteen and soon, with the help of friends, found himself drawing for magazines, including Vanity Fair. He is permanently associated with “the smart set,” show business and the Harlem Revival and his images of them call up an age (or two). Billy Rose (1899-1966) was a theatrical impresario (Jumbo, Carmen Jones) and nightclub owner as well as the writer of over fifty hit songs. The second of these caricature sketches bears a personal message verso wishing success. Not signed but unquestionably by the named artist. Sold as a pair.
