Pen and black ink on card, 103 mm. diameter (borderline). Calvert is famous for precisely eleven exquisite miniature prints – engravings, wood engravings and lithographs – all done before 1832, after which he went on to other, generally less interesting things. While a number of his drawings have survived (mostly in museums) there are very few in anything like the drawing style of those early prints. This is one. It comes from an album of drawings belonging to Mary Calvert, the daughter of the artist, and one could easily mistake it for a wood engraving, particularly with its drawn, circular borderlines. It is signed very lightly in pencil with initials. A great rarity and, like the prints, exquisite.
