Black crayon on blue-grey laid paper, 1913, 239 x 300 mm. (sheet), 130 x 140 mm. (image). Müller, an Austrian etcher and painter, is well known for a large number of rather weird prints, somewhat in the manner of Max Klinger. These were all done before 1924, after which he devoted himself to painting somewhat more conventional pictures. One would not call this drawing weird, at least not in the sense of his etchings. But there is a quiet mystery about it that belies its simple subject, so that it seems to be not a drawing of a lady playing the piano, but a drawing of an apparition of a lady playing the piano. The “silence”of the image is almost overwhelming. The drawing is signed with initials and dated in pencil.
