Caricature Portrait of Eugene O’Neill

Brush and black ink, 275 x 207 mm. Auerbach-Levy is well known as a sensitive etcher, his subject matter often, but not always, Judaica. He, however, had a quite different ability, that of caricature, and his caricature illustrations were widely published in such magazines as The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and others, and were sometimes made into color woodcuts or linocuts with the aid of Harry de Maine. He also wrote a book on caricature. This is a rare, original drawing by him, on thick japan paper and signed with initials. The edges of the paper are stained and browned, not affecting the image. Another quite different caricature of O’Neill is in the Ackland Art Museum, University of North Carolina, together with the linocut made after it.
