Other Images:
Pencil on brownish laid paper, ca. 1951, 297 x 397 mm. Webster was a prolific American etcher and lithographer who spent most of his life in France and traveling around Europe. This is a preliminary drawing for the etching of the same name of 1951 (Webster 175). A superb signed and inscribed artist’s proof of the etching is sold with the drawing. The scene, of course, is looking across to the Piazza San Marco. Webster, like all good artists, was intent on making a viable graphic image, not merely transcribing what he saw, and the etching shows a major rearrangement of the boats as well as additions and modifications of other elements. The drawing, much larger than the print, is laid down to another sheet and bears the estate stamp. Sold as a pair.
