The Merchant of Juniper (Gin) and Three Beggars
Etching, Bartsch 5, Hollstein 5 ii/ii, 105 x 101mm. A very good impression, oddly enough on apparently wove paper with small margins and therefore a 19th-century printing. There must have been very few contemporary impressions of the print for the plate to have survived in such good condition. In truth, the peddling of liquor to beggars may not have been an image of much appeal to early collectors, perhaps akin today to pictures of the homeless on city streets. But like so many prints, it tells of the realities of earlier times.
