Satyr Spying on a Sleeping Nymph
Etching and engraving, 1604, Bartsch 112 (as Carracci), Bohlin R30 ii/ii, 185 x 133 mm., ex collection: Graf F. J. Enzenberg (Lugt 845). Generally fine impression on thin laid paper with narrow margins; a glue stain at the lower right with a surface loss, a couple of tiny holes, slight wrinkling. The plate is obviously related to Carracci’s Lascivie,, though it is from a few years later than that famous set and a good bit milder in its sexual content. Once thought to be by Carracci himself, it has since been assigned to Brizio, an eminent artist himself and the pupil of Agostino Carracci.
