Etchings, 1871, Apell 7-10, 420 x 310 mm., ex collection: Frederic R. Halsey (Lugt1308). Superb proof impressions, before any letters, on chine-appliqué with large, full margins. Each print is inscribed (signed?) in pencil: “Radirt von Prof. Willmann.” Professor Willmann was born and died in Karlsruhe and taught at the School of Art in Frankfurt, though he was known to have also worked in France (which explains the Edouard). He was basically a printmaker (a very capable one) who often worked after the designs of others, and these four prints are as sweet a graphic representation of romantic German imagery as one will find. The Philadelphia Museum of Art owns a set (with the letters). Sold as a set of four.
