Woman of Antwerp
Etching, 1643, Parthey and Pennington 1944 unknown state, 91 mm. diameter. Fine impression on laid paper trimmed to the circular border and therefore lacking the signature and date; a tiny loss at the top. Hollar, originally from Bohemia, was something of a world traveler, and he recorded in his prints not merely the topography and tourist sites of the places he visited but the local costumes and fashions as well. The peculiar forehead ornament of this Flemish woman must have been among the odder ones he saw, but the woman looks quite as comfortable wearing it as any modern girl with a gold nose ring and green hair.
