Horses and Hounds in Falling Snow

Original drawing in ink and gouache, 1921, 140 x 190 mm, signed and dated in ink, on textured paper, laid down(?) with bits of old mounting paper in the margins. For all the hundreds, if not thousands, of works by and after Taquoy that have been sold over the years, practically nothing seems to have been written about the man. Painter, draughtsman, printmaker and illustrator, he depicted horses, hunts, sports, fashions and the like in an exacting, and immediately recognizable, art-deco style, essentially putting him out of the reach of those who wrote about art nouveau, post-impressionism, symbolism, the Pont Aven school and other developments of 19th and early 20th-century art in France. Highly commercial at times (he made a living), he could be, in his own style and quite divorced from the development of modern art, an exquisite artist.
