Peasant Man and Woman Dancing
Etching from ‘T Boeren Leven (Peasant Life), Wurzbach 192, Hollstein 282-9, 79 x 120 mm. A fine, early impression, apparently before any number and possibly the first state of four, on thin, laid paper with thread margins or trimmed on the plate mark. Nolpe was not the least of those Netherlandish artists who depicted peasant life, though his name is not as familiar, and his etchings not seen anywhere near as often, as those of Ostade, Bega or Dusart, to name just a few. A pity, because he was a fine artist.
