Wood engraving ( ?), 1898, Arwas 56 ( ?), Bibliothèque National Inventaire 39 ( ?) 488 x 359 mm., with the blind stamp H7 R 9K (unidentified). A fine proof impression, before text and before colors, on thin oriental paper with good margins, backed with linen; a small paper defect in the image. The details of many of these art nouveau prints are often confusing and sometimes impossible to pin down. The large image is both attractive and typical of Grasset’s work: fruit, flowers and foliage surrounding a pretty woman. But indicating just how the print was made and how it was issued was obviously of no great importance to the artist, or to the publisher, particularly in such a commercial venture as this. But it is the very application of aesthetic artistry to commercial products that was at the heart of the art nouveau movement – so who are we to complain? Most likely a rare print, certainly in this proof state.
